Dental Implants

Sellwood-Moreland and Portland OR

At Whole Health Dentistry, we offer dental implants as a long-term replacement for missing teeth.

A dental implant is the best solution available in restorative dentistry for tooth replacement. It also protects against the jawbone deterioration that can occur over time from missing teeth.

Why does this happen? When a tooth is missing, it causes the other teeth to shift out of place, leading to a misaligned bite. Jaw pain, difficulty eating, and lack of confidence can occur when a tooth is missing.

How can a dental implant help?

An implant consists of the replacement tooth, similar to a dental crown, and the implant itself—a small titanium post that is surgically inserted into and fuses with the jawbone and replaces the missing tooth root. With a dental implant in place, your bite is restored, the jawbone is preserved, and you get your self-confidence back along with a beautiful smile.

Advantages of dental implants

The installation of an implant does not require any healthy tooth structure to be removed, unlike with a dental bridge.

Dental implants are extremely durable and functional. Since dental implants are surgically inserted, they do not have to be removed for cleaning, like dentures do; just brush them as you would your remaining natural teeth. Implants also will not slip like dentures, and where bridges or dentures will need to be replaced, an implant can last you the rest of your life.

Are dental implants right for me?

In general, dental implants are ideal for patients with optimal jawbone levels, and overall good health. However, there are certain conditions in which a patient is not a good candidate for dental implants. During your consultation with Dr. Smith at Whole Health Dentistry, she will determine your candidacy for dental implants and discuss other tooth replacement options with you if necessary.

Overall health is important; chronic illnesses such as diabetes or blood diseases can interfere with healing after the installation of an implant. For the success and longevity of the implant, it is advised that you discontinue smoking or using tobacco of any form after your surgical procedure.

Good oral health also is a pre-requisite before having a dental implant; the adjacent teeth and gums must be healthy, and any instance of gum disease must be fully treated before an implant installation.

Implants also are not recommended for children.
